Biomodelling Spring Riga 2018

Our group has used many opportunities of training courses, workshops and conferences made by our colleagues. Now we want to contribute to the interaction of modeler’s and biologist’s communities by giving opportunity to meet once a year in Riga. We want to give a stage to the developers and users of different systems biology, systems medicine and synthetic biology modeling approaches to present their newest software, results and application examples.

15.-17. May 2018 we organized Biomodelling Spring Riga in collaboration with COST action OpenMultiMed. Our main guest lecturer is Dr. Jürgen Pahle from Center for Modelling and Simulation in the Biosciences (BIOMS) and Center for Quantitative Analysis of Molecular and Cellular Biosystems (BioQuant) Heidelberg University, Germany.

The main topic of the course is software COPASICOmplex PAthway SImulator.

The final conference of SMARTPLANTS project in Cambridge

Conference Crossing Kingdoms, the final conference of the project SMARTPLANTS took place at  Sainsbury Laboratory at University of Cambridge 16.-18. April, 2018. Crossing Kingdoms is an international 3 day-event bringing together scientists from the microbial, animal and plant fields (Kingdoms) to present their results and highlighting how knowledge from these different life forms provide tools for synthetic biology innovations and applications. The SMARTPLANTS project members had several presentations of project results.

House of Science of the University of Latvia is under construction

The new house of Science is under construction in the neighborhood of the House of Nature at the Academic Centre. It is expected that studies and research activities will be started at the beginning of 2019. That means, our group will be located closer to the specialists of Physics and other fields facilitating the interdisciplinarity of the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology.

Visiting Rhodolive partner – Likožar group in Ljubljana

In February 2018 there was an opportunity to visit the group of Blaž Likožar in Ljubljana, Slovenia. We found quite many topics where we apply similar approaches. Mostly that can be related to the modelling using constraint based stoichiometric modelling approaches. We coordinated also our joint activities in the Rhodolive project that will start 1-st June 2018.

COBRA v3.0 including our Paint4net published at arXiv

We are happy to participate in COBRA v3.0 publication that is equipped with scripts enabling testing the proposed tools on your own computer on your own Matlab program. We are proud to see with our COBRA Toolbox Paint4Net among other COBRA v3.0 tools. Paint4net is quite unique visualiser with selective scope of visualisation: selected network fragments with flux values can be visualised with automatic generation of layout.

In connection with RECON 3.0 (genome scale stoichiometric reconstruction of human metabolism) the new COBRA v3.0 can be very powerful for medical applications.
