14th European Conference on the Spectroscopy of Biological Molecules (ECSBM2011) Coimbra, Portugal, August 29 to September 3, 2011 Print
Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:14

ECSBM is a biannual conference that takes place in a different European country, and is aimed as a scientific forum for spectroscopists to meet and present their latest research work.

The scientific program included plenary lectures given by authorities of the field - Max Diem, Peter Gardner, Anthony Parker, Steven Boxer, John Tomkinson, Achim Kohler, Andreas Barth, et al. not only covering an overview of the topic but showing new approaches and indicating future actualities.

Vibrational spectroscopy and imaging of cells was widely presented and applications in biotechnology, single cell, microbe and bacteria studies as well as potential in medicine for the cell discrimination shown. Half a day presentations were on neutron techniques, theoretical approaches and ultra-fast techniques. Latvian Systems biology group was represented by Mara Grube and Marita Gavare (4th activity of the project) with a poster on the recent results concerning FT-IR spectroscopy analysis of Zymomonas mobilis respiratory mutants.

It was good experience to be there and see presentations of authorities of the field in order to understand the importance of these methods nowadays.

Proceedings of the 14th ECSBM will be published in a special, dedicated, issue of "Spectroscopy - Biomedical Applications" (IOS-Press, NL).
