Each year The Student council organizes the annual award in several categories. Students are suggesting the best people, departments, organizations and most significant events at the university. The best ones are chosen by the Student council for the award.

The leader of Biosystems Group Egils Stalidzans was nominated in the category “Scientist of The Year 2011” and has won the prize. In the winner’s speech the Egils Stalidzans underlined the importance of good team spirit in the Biosystems group and Systems Biology project.

About ten lecturers from Europe will arrive to Jelgava to give lectures in the ERASMUS IP course “Modeling in Systems Biology and Synthetic Biology” 2.-13. July 2012. Twelve universities from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, United Kingdom, Germany, Slovenia and Iceland have joined their forces to facilitate application of modeling in biological applications to increase the efficiency of research. Natalja Bulipopa (Biosystems group) and Agris Dobrovolskis (Department of foreign affairs) are the main organizers of the event. We hope to receive funding also for courses in 2013 and 2014.

This event will also interact with ERASynBio project of FP7.

After kind invitation of the coordinator of the project Veronika Simons (Projekttraeger Juelich GmbH, Germany), Egils Stalidzans had an opportunity to present Latvian Systems Biology Initiative to the Steering committee of the ERASysBio+ project. General status of systems biology related research in Latvia was explained indicating also the high potential of Latvian pharmacologists.
