22-nd May 2012 was a historical day for the Faculty of Information technology. The first doctoral student has defended his theses in the doctoral study program “Information Technology”. Ivars was among the first doctoral students entering the doctoral study program in September 2006. Ivars was also one of three founders of the Biosystems group in October 2006!

The theses were supported by the interuniversity Systems biology group. The senior researcher of the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology Dr.biol. Peteris Zikmanis was the official consultant of this research.

In May 2012 Jurijs Sulins and Egils Stalidzans went to the beautiful Heidelberg to meet one of groups at BIOQUANT which are involved in the development of COPASI software.

Our main aim was to start the cooperation in the development of COPASI compatible toolboxes for different optimization tasks. We had interesting discussions with Sven Sahle, Ralf Gauges and Katrin Huebner. Sven and Katrin will visit Latvia for the ERASMUS IP course on modelling!

In March 2012 the BIOSS centre at the University of Freiburg was organizing for the first time a 10 days course “BIOSS Practical Course 2012 Synthetic Biology and Signalling” for methods of synthetic biology including metabolic engineering. The BIOSS centre demonstrated outstanding progress in implementation of different parts in various cells and tissues for limited number of students from very different countries. The largest number of students per country was from Latvia (two students)!!!

It was agreed to collaborate in the preparation of Intensive Program ERASMUS course for modelling.

At February 23 Martins Mednis was visiting professor David Fell in Oxford Brookes University. Disscussed topics mainly include reconstruction comparison, particulary the model comparison tool developed by Biosystems Group in Latvia University of Agriculture.

Discussion on model comparison:

  • Suspiciously low number of common reactions
  • Filtering of metabolites
  • Metabolite substitution with chem. formulas
  • Evaluation by additional criteria
  • Graph analisys

Objectives of the trip achieved. The interest in comparison of reconstructions have been created. We also agreed on further steps in our collaboration and work on the upcoming article.
