Beehive observation system

Within Latvian Council of Science grant Nr. 08.2179 „ Detection of preswarming condition of bee colony based on dynamics of microclimate” a measurement and observation system for two bee cvolonies was built.

Developed beehive observation system consists of 1) control subsystem, 2) measuring (temperature and relative humidity) subsystem and 3) video recording subsystem. Video monitoring of the front of the beehive (video camera 1) as well as environment (video camera 2) is switched on when untypical changes of microclimate are detected. That allows to find out reasons of each particular case of microclimate changes (swarming, direct sunshine, rain, strong wind, noise or other reasons). Our particular interest was to see if we can identify preswarmin, swarming or afterswarm stage in the colony. Jurijs Meitalovs based his bachelors work on this Project and received a prize for best bachelors wirk in IT Branch in Latvia in 2009.


Biosim in Budapest

Egils Stalidzans was invited to the meeting of Network of Excellence of FP6 „BioSim” (


The Project is dedicated to systems biology approach solving biological problems. Egils Stalidzans had the opportunity to present on the meeting the Biosystems group as well as Latvia University of Agriculture.

Doctoral short course on Biomodelling October 2007 a doctoral course on Biomodelling was held in Latvia University of Agriculture. The contents of the course were arranged by the Biosystems group under leadership of Egils Stalidzans. Two guest lecturers kindly agreed to participate with lectures on modelling (PhD Ion Petre, Academy of Finland, Turku, Finland) and statistiscs (PhD Tanel Kaart, Estonia University of Life Science, Estonia). Our doctoral student Ivars Mozga assisted and participated in the course.

Trully interntional team of students has come to the course. Besides Baltic representatives we had students from Abo Akademi (Finland) which were born in Poland, Moldova and China. In this course Ion Petre has demonstrated Harvard video on cellular processes which has inspired many of us
